Our user asked: "Hello I am looking to go into PT school one day but just had a few basic questions. I've heard during labs or demonstrations we will be required to wear sports bras and swimsuits. Is that true? Also will other students be touching my private or uncomforable areas for learning or demonstrations because I may feel a little uncomfortable. Is it possible for girls to always pair up with girls? And lasly would I have to do all that if I chose occupational therapy instead? Thank you so much"

Ask a PT Response: "Yes, that is a requirement to wear clothing that allows easy access to areas which are being studied. Yes, there may be times when there may be touching of areas which are considered private. Yes, it may be possible to pair up with girls but as a PT you will have to see males as well so it would be beneficial to also work with males. Just like any other health profession, we are working with patients which requires us to have in depth knowledge of human anatomy. Both physical therapists and occupational therapists require the use of their hands in both diagnostic skills and treatment skills for our patients. Therefore, there may be situations where we may be put in an uncomfortable and awkward situation and will require us to act with utmost professionalism. If you are truly interested in becoming a PT or OT it may be a good idea for you to shadow therapists in different settings to determine if this is a field that would suit your needs and comfort level."
