Rotator Cuff Syndrome: From Impingement to Post Operative

 Shoulder/Elbow/Wrist/Hand

 Colorado Colorado Springs, Denver 8/18/10 - 8/19/10
 Utah Salt Lake City 8/20/10

Discover how to be more innovative in your treatment planning for rotator cuff syndrome. Includes hands-on lab sessions so participants will leave with applicable concepts and skills.

Because of the complex design of the rotator cuff, it is susceptible to injury. These injuries can be due to overuse in sports activities or it can occur from repetitive motions. Whatever the cause, weakness, stiffness and pain often ensue. Because the shoulder plays a sizable role in arm functioning, proper rehabilitation of this joint is essential to return the patient to a healthy state. Further complicating the issue is reimbursement and providers that only allot a limited number of visits to complete rehabilitation. Clinicians must be knowledgeable about not only "tried and true" techniques, but must stay abreast of current research, new products available and developments within their field. Clinicians who fail to do this can be increasing their patient's recuperation time and missing important treatment goals.

This one-day course will demonstrate how to be more innovative in your treatment planning, examine functional approaches to rehabilitation of the kinetic chains, and illustrate the benefits of incorporating evidenced based approaches into your "bag of treatment tools." Additionally, attendees will examine rotator cuff injuries that occur at different points in the human lifespan, as well as recommended treatment for each population. Why certain injuries are more common with particular age groups, such as instability in teenagers and degenerative joint disease in aging patients will be examined as well. Course participants will explore protocols for pathology of the shoulder with "hands-on" lab sessions so they can return to their rehabilitation settings with applicable concepts and skills. Clinicians will come away excited about trying new, practical techniques that produce results and in turn, their orthopedic rehab patients will demonstrate a more positive attitude about their recovery.

  • Explain how to incorporate Evidence Based Practice (EBP) into your treatment plan
  • Describe the importance of scapula-cuff stabilization
  • Outline how to design the vital five exercise program for impingement, lesions and tears
  • Demonstrate and participate in hands-on manual exercises
  • Examine rotator cuff injuries in adolescents, adults and the elderly and identify why the healing process is different for each group
  • Define functionality of the shoulder
  • Discuss the true function of the rotator cuff
  • Examine why scapula stabilization is the core of the rotator cuff
  • Determine when and how to use closed kinetic chain exercises for the upper extremity
  • Assess the importance of positional recruitment for open kinetic chain exercises based on evidence-based practice
  • Reconsider the use of elastic band exercises
  • Expand your hands-on mobility skills

What You Should Bring
