Our user asked: "I can no longer stretch my right arm behind my back (from waist height) and reach my left hand behind my back (needed to grab soap to wash my back). Is there a way to loosen the right forearm so my hands can reach each other again? The right arm reaches over my shoulder to my left hand when the left arm is at waist height."

Ask a PT Response: "When patients have difficulty with achieving movement as you described it is often associated with tightness at the rotator cuff. A towel stretch can be performed to assist with achieving increase internal rotation. To perform the stretch the patient will put the involved arm behind the back and grab a towel on one end. The patient will then pull the involved arm up behind the back by pulling on the other end of the towel with the other arm. ie: http://breastcancer.about.com/od/lifeaftertreatment/ss/arm_exercises_tutorial_9.htm - http://breastcancer.about.com/od/lifeaftertreatment/ss/arm_exercises_tutorial_9.htm .
If the GH/shoulder joint is hypomobilie, jont mobilization techniques can be performed as well."
