Our user asked: "The therapist uses a loop around the my ankle and uses his foot in an attached stirrup to press down and separate the replaced knee joint slightly and then he manually manipulates the joint. Is this safe? Is it necessary? I have 0 degrees and 120 degrees flexibility 6 weeks post op."

Ask a PT Response: "It sounds like your therapist is distracting your knee slightly to help you obtain more range of motion. There are many devices out there that help assist in obtaining more range of motion. A slight distraction is normal to apply in most cases. If your range of motion is already 0-120 degrees 6 weeks post op you are doing well. Your range of motion is functional. The normal range of motion for a non affected knee is around 0-135 degrees. It appears your therapist is trying to help you achieve maximal outcome with your range of motion."
