Our user asked: "I am 7 weeks out from a broken tib/fib fracture. My OS okayed WBAT as long there is not "too much pain." I did not have any pain when he checked the site, but I have been trying to put 25-50% WB adn I feel at the break site. I was wondering how much pain is too much pain and if it was normal to have pain at the fracture site once you begin WB. Thanks!"

Ask a PT Response: "WBAT is exactly what it means - putting as much weight on your involved extremity as you can tolerate. Your surgeon would not allow for this weight bearing status unless you were healing well and he or she was confident you would not do damage by bearing weight through your involved extremity. As far as too much pain goes, for many of my patients that means pain anywhere from a 4-8 out of 10 on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the most sever pain. Pain perception will vary among patients so it really is to their tolerace. It is not abnormal to have some pain at the site where a fracture has occured with weight bearing. As the patient continues to heal, it will take some time for the patient to progress to and tolerate full weight bearing. If you are not working with a PT, it may be a good idea to start working with one so that he or she can monitor and progress your status so that you can achieve maximal functional outcomes."
