Our user asked: "Hello I had knee surgery on June 30th. I had the TOPAZ procedure on my patellar tendon which helped but they also found that a large piece of the cartlidge that is supposed to be under my knee cap was floating around in my knee so they removed that and ended up shaving off most of the cartlidge that was under my knee. Since then I have had Orthovisc injections. At this point I am still in pain. I work out on a regular basis to try to strenghten my quads and other muscles in my leg. I have been doing some research and now I am wondering if maybe my knee cap is not tracking correctly or maybe my muscles are off balance. My question is is there an easy way to check to see if my knee is not tracking correctly? Or how can I tell what muscles I need to strengthen? Thank you for your time and knowledge."
Ask a PT Response: "Has your therapist ever measured your Q-angle. A higher Q-angle usually results in patella tracking problems. Oftern times for my patient's who I suspect have patella tracking issues after conducting my initial evaulation, I would try patellofemoral taping in accordance with my findings. If the pain decreases or alleviates with the taping, I will instruct my patient on the taping method. With my patients who have PF trackign problems I have them work on not only strengthening the quads and hams but the hips and core as well. Stretching of these regions are also prescribed to these patients. I hope this helps."
