Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 874
Posted: Jul 06 2011 at 9:08am

Our user asked: "My husband is a firefighter with a C7 bulging disc injury. How long would you estimate he be off duty with this injury? Should he return to full duty when pain free, but still experiencing numbness in his arms? Besides the cervical ROM and cervical isometrics are there any other exercises he could be doing?"

Ask a PT Response: "Everything is going to depend on how severe the bulging disc is and how long he has had this condition with accompanying symptoms. Given your husband's occupation, I would be more guarded with him returning to full work duties. Is your husband currenlty participating in physical therapy? If not, it may be a good idea as the PT can incorporate traction and have him work on exercises which may help reduce the disc bulge along with strengthening and functional training."
