Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 796
Posted: Jan 24 2011 at 10:48am

Our user asked: "I have pain on the bottom of my feet when I use a treadmill, run or exercise. My arches don't hurt, nor the ball of my foot - all the way down from under my pinky toe to my heel. It is the outer area of the bottom of my foot, basically opposite to the arch. It is a muscle pain, not stabbing. I have tried Spenco hard plastic inserts, but they hardly give any relief. I have seen a podiatrist and he is stumped and said that orthotics will probably not help. Have you ever heard of this before?"

Ask a PT Response: "Do you know what led to the onset of this pain? Were you running on uneven surfaces, jumping, doing something out of the ordinary, trauma, etc? Have you had an x-ray or any other medical imaging performed yet? Possible injuries to this area can include hairline fractures, tarsal coalition, lis franc injury, cuboid subluxation, etc. If you are able to, it may be a good idea to see a physical therapist so that he or she can conduct an evaluation including a gait analysis to determine possible causes for your pain. A plan of care specific to your needs can then be devleoped from the findings of the evaluation."
