He is a middle distance runner (800 & 1500). The district track meet is coming up in a week and a half. He has not run or done any workouts since the strain. I had him in the swimming pool doing upper body work, but I am concerned about his cardio. Do you have some ideas for me to keep his cardio up while protecting the hamstring?"

Ask a PT Response: "For my patients who have sustained hamstring strains or similiar injuries and would like to keep their cardio up, I would have them utilize various machines such as the arm bike, rowing machine, stationary bike (if this doesn't irritate hamstring) or swimming. Would progress to elipitcal, treadmill and jogging once hamstring condition has improved. "
