Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 345
Posted: Jan 07 2009 at 2:31pm

Our user asked: "Two weeks ago I completed six weeks of PT for a "strained" rotator cuff. Around week four of the PT I was FINALLY able to sleep without pain. By the end of the six weeks my ROM was greatly improved and I have continued to do my exercises every other day. About a week ago I started having the pain at night again and it has continued each night. My ROM has decreased and there is some pain/discomfort during exercise and normal activity. What would you recommend as my next course of action? More PT? I have not seen an Orthopedic Dr, only my GP. What about an MRI?"

Ask a PT Response: "Sorry to hear that your pain has come back. Did you perform any activity which could have exacerbated your condition? With a rotator cuff strain, it it isn't fully healed, it is more easier for reinjury to occur. I would recommend you consult with your PT to see what he or she would recommend as you have been working with him or her for the past 6 weeks and he or she will know your condition the best. For my patients if there condition improves and than worsens, I would have them come back to see me. If participaing in PT agains doesn't help I would than recommend an orthpedic consult along with a MRI. Best of luck to you."
