Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 343
Posted: Jan 07 2009 at 12:45pm

Our user asked: "I was wondering if there are any exercises I could do to strengthen my back. I've had 11 back surgeries...I have severe kyphoscoliosis. I am really stiff, and have trouble sitting up with my legs out front. I usually end up falling back. Is there anything I can do to help or has my muscles in my back been too damaged?"

Ask a PT Response: "Without physically examining you and given your past medical history, it would be very difficult for me to suggest a home exercise program. My advice to you would be to set up an appointment with a PT in your area so that he or she can evaluate you and develop a home exercise program based on his or her findings and your specific needs. If sitting balance is an issue, it is within the scope of PT services to assist you with achieving improved sitting balance and posture. Sorry, I could not have been of more help."
