Our user asked: "Good afternoon. I am currently recovering from a right ankle trimalleolar fx. I have been granted FWB privileges and I am currently working with a PT 3x/week. I was wondering what I could be doing at home to simulate the exercise machines I am using at the facility and what I could be doing at home to speed things along. At therapy I use the shuttle system, recumbent stair stepper, and baps board. I am having problems with my dorsiflexion and seem to be stuck at neutral. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you."

Ask a PT Response: "To simulate the shuttle one can utilize thera band around your ankle and either anchoring the other end to something or have someone hold it. The knees can be either bent or straight while performing ankle DF and PF.

Recumbent stair stepper, one can put belts around each foot and simulate stepping in sitting and pulling belts reciprocally into DF for a stretch when bringing each leg back.

BAPS board take a cutting board or cookie sheet and place some kind of ball undeneath it. The bigger the ball, the more challenging.

These are just some ideas. One can be quite creative when coming up with other exercises which can be performed at home which may simulate equipment. I hope this helps."
