Our user asked: "My wrist hurts me when I grip things too tightly. I hurt it years and years ago falling on and having it bend backwards. It doesn't hurt when I do some athletic activities like lifting and rock climbing but specifically when I strongly grip a pipe or something else round. Grip strengthens also bring about the pain. The pain comes from the middle of my wrist new the top surface and lasts a couple of seconds then dissipates. I use a powerball and it makes it strong enough to not experience the pain under the same situation."

Ask a PT Response: "There are a number of reasons why you might be experiencing pain at your wrists when you perform a strong contraction ie, instability, weakness, impingement, etc. Without physically examining you, it would be difficult to determine the cause of your pain. Sounds like you are on the right path as far as performing strengthening exercises which help simulate the strength required to perform the functional activities which you are experiencing pain with. If you don't continue to show improvement, it may be a good idea to finaly get it checked out by your MD or PT."
