Our user asked: "my mother broke her ankle and had to have a plate put in. they did not suggest physical therapy after the boot came off...she is now suffering from major back ache that goes from neck to both feet....do u think this is related to the injury and do u think pt would help?

Ask a PT Response: "Ambulating with a boot on can throw off gait mechanics as the patient is essentially ambulating with one lower extremity longer than the other. The weight of the boot can cause compensatory patterns as well. Such patterns could include leaning to one side, increase hip hike, etc which could result in additional stresses placed on the back. From what you describe, PT may be a good course to helping your mother acheive improve function and mobility along with decrease pain."
