I have been diagnosed with rotator cuff tendonitis and the doctor wants to give me a cortisone injection into my shoulder at the next visit. I have heard some bad things about steroid injections. My doctor assures me that they are safe. Is this the case? Thanks

Cortisone is a steroid that is often used to help control inflammation. It is also used to assist in dissolving scar tissue and with helping cysts disappear. It can be harmful if used too frequently in one area. In fact, most healthcare professionals that I have talked to don’t recommend more than 3 injections in the same exact area over a three month period of time. The reason for this is that cortisone can weaken the tendons of a muscle and soften the cartilage of a joint if it is given in excess in these areas.

In your case the injection could prove quite helpful for your shoulder and bring down the inflammation of your rotator cuff. Please remember that everyone is different and each individual will respond differently. Therefore, don’t be surprised if your doctor recommends a second or third cortisone injection.
