Our user asked: "I broke my tibia on October 9, 2010. The break is fine, but I have plantar phisitis (spelling?) and pes anserine bursitis. The doctor has twice injected cortosone and pain killer in the heal and between the calf and knee. I have been in therapy since the first of December but this doesn't seem to want to go away. The doctor has had me stop therapy but continue at home. I do use ice packs when it is bad. Do you have an idea as to what I can do to get back to 'normal'? Thank you for your help!"

Ask a PT Response: "With plantar fasciitis, stretching, orthotics, manual therapy (massage/myofascial release) and a night splint are some options to assist with recovering. With pes anserine bursitis, the onset of pain is usually contributed to some stressful factor to that region. How are you walking right now? Are you still walking with a limp? Given your history of a fracture at the tibia, I would assume that you more than likely altered your gait mechanics which may have contributed to your knee and heel/foot pain. The most important thing to address is to make sure you have sufficient strength, joint mobility and range of motion at your ankles, knees, and hips so that you can attain a normal gait pattern. This will help with a more even distribution of stresses throughout your body when performing activities on your feet. It would probably be a good idea to continue with the plan of care established by your physical therapist. If your condition doesn't improve after a period of time, I would have your doctor take a closer look at you to make sure there isn't something else going on at your knee which may be contributing to your symptoms. Best of luck to you."
