Our user asked: "Is it o.k to ice around repair site, lateral (covered with light bandage. Effect on repair site? Want to reduce edema as fast as possible due to 2ndary post op tarsal tunnel numbness sole of foot, first three toes. Been told that the old scar medial at tarsal tunnel has been effected by edema causing post. tibial nerve compression. any ideas ? mainly any contra indications to ice"

Ask a PT Response: "For my patients who have undergone this type of surgery, the use of ice is permitted. Ice is contraindicated, however, if the patient has cold hypersensitivity, cold intolerance, cryoglobulinemia, cryoglobulineuria, Raynaud's Disease, over regenerating nerve or circulatory compromise. With any of my patients, should there be any doubts, the surgeon would be contacted for further guidance."
