Our user asked: "I had surgery for a bimalleolar ankle fracture on 1/13. I still have blood pooling in my foot. Foot and lower leg are noticeably darker (darkish red), and the veins protrude more than the right leg. Elevating foot lightens color but it returns as soon as foot is down. I also still have burning / stinging / tingling sensations in the foot, seemingly on the surface of the skin of the foot. There is also a painful rash on the sole, consisting of small red bumps. Is this normal 2months post-surgery? Thanks for any info you can give." Ask a PT Response: "Having edema and some circulatory issues after surgery and immobility at the ankle is to be expected. If you have not already made your surgeon aware of your condition, including the rash, it may be a good idea to do so now just to be on the safe side. Your surgeon will know your condition the best and should be able to give you the best recommendation. Perhaps a referral to physical therapy from your surgeon could also be beneficial for your edema, circulation, range of motion, function etc. Best of luck to you." |
