Our user asked: "I run about 15 miles a week on average and have been experiencing knee pain. I think this pain is a result of a tight IT band and hips. I have been doing exercises to strengthen my quad and loosen my hamstrings and it seems to relieve the pain temporarily but it returns after I put normal mileage knee pain seems to return. I also have running shoes fitted to my style. Any stretching or strengthening suggestions?"
Ask a PT Response: "Pain at the outside of the knee can be associated with the iliotibial band. Strengthening your quads and stretching your hamstrings are some exercises a PT would prescribe to their patients if there are deficiencies in these areas. ITB and piriformis stretches are often prescribed to their patients as well for ITB syndrome. Treatment options for a Physical Therapist with a few video examples of the exercises which a PT may prescribe can be found at http://www.cyberpt.com/cptcondtrt8illbndsyn.asp. Should you continue to experience symptoms, it may be worth your while to see a PT so that he or she can determine what truly may be causing your knee pain especially if you are an avid runner."
