Our user asked: "I was diagnosed with a sprained wrist/partial ligament tear. It has been over 5 weeks and I was recommended to go to PT. How long until I can start lifting weights again? Thank you for your time."

Ask a PT Response: "The severity of the sprain, in your case a grade 2 sprain (moderate sprain with partial tear of the ligaments), and your ability to heal will determine when you can return to your prior level of function. Pain, edema (swelling), strength, range of motion and joint stability are just a few factors to consider when trying to return to an activity such as lifting. It may be a good idea to follow that recommendation and see a PT so that he or she can better examine you and prescribe to you the most appropriate exercise which you should be performing based on the PT findings. From my experience grade II sprains can take anywhere from 2-4 months or greater for recovery. Therefore, you could actually do more damage if you return to an activity such as lifting if your wrist is not ready for it. Good luck and thanks for using CyberPT."
