Our user asked: "my physically active 78 y/o husband is having problems with his right thigh "giving out" and would like to know what exercises will strengthen that leg. He had a hip pinning in that leg 5 years ago and does not complain of any pain but noticed marked weakness after down hill skiing recently."

Ask a PT Response: "It might be a good idea for your husband to work with a PT to determine what may be contributing to his "thigh giving out".
Otherwise this webiste has some good samples of exercises which I give my patients for hips and legs: http://edinformatics.com/health_fitness/sample_exercises_ch4a.htm
As a progression I would have my patients utilize some light ankle weights to start off with for the standing exericses while holding onto the chair. 1/4 Wall slides are good for strengthening quads (thigh muscles) as well. I hope this helps."
