Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 835
Posted: Mar 29 2011 at 12:43pm

Our user asked: "Thank you in advance for reviewing my questions. As a competitive arm wrestler Ive developed quite a few tendon issues. The worst is what seems like tendonitis of the brachialis. Are there any exercises for this? The other pain runs medially from the elbow to about halfway down the forearm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!"

Ask a PT Response: "The primary function of the brachialis muscle is to flex the elbow, unlike biceps brachii which also flexes the elbow and supinates the forearm. For my patients with any form of tendonitis, rest from the aggravating activity is usually recommended accompanied with stretching, range of motion, gentle strengthening and ice. To stretch the brachialis muscle one would stretch into elbow extension. Other treatment options in physical therapy include soft tissue mobilization, myofscial release and other manual therapy techniques. Modalities such as ultrasound, phonophoresis or iontophoresis are considered as well. Medial elbow and forearm pain could be a variety of things most commonly golfer's elbow: http://www.cyberpt.com/cptcondtrtgolferselbow.asp. Given the nature of your sport and your injury, it may be a good idea to seek treatment from a PT to encourage a faster recovery and the achieve optimal outcomes. Best of luck to you."
