Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 733
Posted: Sep 22 2010 at 2:21pm

Our user asked: "I will be having a total replacement of the left hip in January. Currently I bike ride for an hour or more almost every day. When it gets cold and snowy I ride a stationery bike or an elliptical trainer for aerobic exercise. So my legs are certainly in good condition. Are there any specific exercises I could do pre-procedure to lessen the recovery time after surgery? Thank you"

Ask a PT Response: "That is great you are riding your bike and staying active. For a lot of my patients that I see before their hip replacement, I would have them work on exercises for strengthening not only their hips but their knees and core as well. Stretching is also recommended to them for increasing/maintaining flexibility at the ITB, hip flexors, quads, hams, & calves. You can see some of the sample exercises which are prescribed on our exercise videos page: http://www.cyberpt.com/cptvidlist.asp

It may also be a good idea to review and practice the post op exercises which are commonly performed by patients after surgery as well: ie. ankle pumps, quad sets, glut sets, heel slides, short arch quads, and straight leg raises. Best of luck to you."
