A nerve could be pinched, fracture, tendon injury, muscle injury, etc.

Just curious if your massage is helping his condition? Nevertheless, if his condition isn't improving it may be a good idea for him to seek medical attention, especailly since you mentioned the pain is now spreading to his back.

Maybe you can give me a little more background on your husband. For example, was there an injury that resulted in this pain, what is his occupation, symptomology (ie. sharp, achy, burning, etc), incident which could have exacerbated condition, past medical history, etc. It it has gotten worst, it may be a good idea to see a MD or PT to get a better idea of what may be going on."
