Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 524
Posted: Nov 18 2009 at 1:16pm

Our user asked: "I had surgery for a hernia in my groin. It was not keyhole surgery, but the old kind with a long incision. I am 58 years old and before the operation exercised a lot, lifting weights, aerobics, pushups, situps, and riding a recumbent a bike. I want to know which exercises I can do in the future and how long to wait before starting my work out program. I live in thailand and had the surgery here. my doctor didn't say, but it seemed he didn't want me to lift weights, do pushups or situps. also, is there any rehab to do before i start? Thanks."

Ask a PT Response: "Hernia repair surgery can vary depending on the patient and surgeon. On average it is recommended that the patient rest anywhere from 6-12 weeks after this surgery. Given that you had the more involved invasive surgery, it would probably be a good idea for you to wait longer before beginning a more involved work out. As far as rehab, patients can perform walking and lift light weights with the UE. Lifting heavier weights, performing abdominal strengthening exercises and other more involved exercises are not performed until the patient is fully healed. You should be following up with your surgeon, so it may be a good idea to ask him what he or she thinks your timeline will be in regards to returning to your prior level of function."
