Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 378
Posted: Mar 10 2009 at 2:52pm

Our user asked: "Hello, I have recently started running again after a several-year break (and several pound weight increase). Recently, when getting off the treadmill I noticed moderate pain in my lower hip, where the leg joint meets the hip, on the outside (not groin or inner-thigh pain). At the time the pain was strong enough to make walking difficult, it has now subsided to moderate pain whenever I walk. Is this common? should I stop running?"

Ask a PT Response: "This is not a common occurence when someone begins a walking program. Were you walking at a high speed or high grade (incline) which may have resulted in your injury? Since you continue to experience pain it would definitely not be a good idea to continue to run as you could further exacerbate your condition. If you have given it some time and rested for awhile and you continue to experience pain it may be a good idea to consult with a PT so that the PT can determine what your injury is and develop a plan of care specific to you and your injury. Good luck!"
