Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 302
Posted: Sep 23 2008 at 11:14am

Our user asked: "I had surgery on the right side of my neck to remove a fatty mass. This was about 3 months ago. Since then, I have been loosing muscle across my shoulder area (you can actually clearly see my all parts of my clavicle). I have loss of strength in my right arm as well. Now I am having having headaches near my right occipital bone. This is far more pain than I ever had when the mass was present. Any suggested help would be appreciated."

Ask a PT Response: "When the surgery was performed was their any neural involvement? The neck has quite a few nerves that branch out towards the shoulder and arm and when involved can result in what you are describing with muscle atrophy, loss of strength and headaches. If you have not done so already, I would recommend you contact your surgeon and make him or her aware of your current condition. Physical therapy could also help you with regaining strength, muscle mass and alleviating your headaches. Never the less you should definitely seek further medical attention as I don't see improvement of your condition on your own."
