Author: Ask a PT
Subject: 288
Posted: Aug 11 2008 at 3:22pm

Our user asked: "I have strained my shoulder (trapesius) and have been stretching and taking motrin for about 6 weeks. I'm not noticing vast improvement. Should I be going back to the gym and doing strenth training? Thank you."

Ask a PT Response: "Since you have not had any improvement with your condition for 6 weeks now, it may be a good ideal to see a physical therapist. He or she will be able to determine if you truly do have a trapezius strain and develop the proper plan of care for you. The PT may also have you demonstrate your weight lifting technique to determine if your posture/mechanics may be off which may be contributing to your symptoms. As far as returning to strength training, it would not be advisable as this time to perform any strength training which may further exacerbate your condition. Good luck with your injury and thanks for using CyberPT."
