I am a 41 yr old male - very active and in good health/shape. Injury was 5 weeks ago - cast came off yesterday. I am going to look for a PT ASAP as I do not want to push to hard/or too little - more important, I want a full recovery. The Ankle videos look much like what I did in college to recover from a sever ankle sprain (which worked very well - back when I was 20 yrs old). Qs: 1) Will the plate in my ankle (and the surgery to put it there) limit my ROM perminently? 2) How long should I expect Rehab to be 3) Doctor said the plate stays in my leg. I have read that some have it removed. I will do what is best physically - but my work requires that I travel extensively - security is going to be a PIA with this thing - any thoughts on having the plate removed? thanks!

ABPT

11 Posts

Posted - 07/22/2007 : 23:03:35 Show Profile Reply with Quote
1) The fibula along with the tibia acts like a mortise (similiar to a plumber's wrench) around the talus and allows you to point your foot up and down. Depending on where the plate and screws are at your fibula, your range of motion can be affected if this joint is restricted. Participation in physical therapy will help you achieve maximal range of motion.
2) Everyone heals and progresses differently. I am assuming you will be weaning yourself back to full weight bearing without an assistive device. From my experience participation in rehabilitation is usually 2-3 months or greater depending on the individual and the progression.
3) Your surgeon will know best and is familiar with your condition. Often times plates will remain given the nature of the injury. I would recommend you consult with your surgeon further about this and share your concerns.

tsb996

USA
2 Posts

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 11:00:15 Show Profile Reply with Quote
I talked to the Doctor today - he agreed to give me a PT perscription: 3 days a week for 4 weeks (I guess this can be extended as needed). I did not see this response in time to ask about the plate location WRT ROM limits (will ask on next visit). Hope my rehab is quicker then 3 months ;-) I will update this thread on my progress. thanks for the reply
