I usually run about 2-3 miles every other day. Today, I am experiencing some pain at the top of my foot towards the ankle and in my shin? What can this be and what can I do to help it? The pain is dull and feels very heavy.
Thanks
BC

ABPT

11 Posts

Posted - 05/25/2006 : 20:11:47 Show Profile Reply with Quote
It sounds like you might have a condition called shin splints. This condition develops along the inside of the shin as a result of the forces exerted with running and pushing off. Often times the muscles involved with bringing your foot up (tibialis anterior) become fatigued and its connection to the bone (fascia) becomes irritated. Running up/down hills could result in this condition if your mechanics are not the greatest, you have weak ankle/leg muscles and you have poor flexibility.

The best thing to do is to take a break from running. Stretching the calf muscles and strengthening the ankle/leg muscles can also help prevent the injury from returning. Anti-inflammatories might be helpful as well if this is something that is allowed by your physician. Should you continue to experience pain after a period of rest then consult with your MD to rule out a stress fracture. This would be the worst case scenario. Participation in physical therapy would definitely help speed up your recovery as well.
