My husband's physician in Milwaukee is referring him back to the pain doctor and is telling her to order a TENS unit. He has had then in the past and they did nothing for him. Should she write the script for a certain type of TENS unit? Any suggestions?"

<SPAN ="spnMessageText">Ask a PT Response: "As far as the TENS unit goes, I really don't know of anything else that is stronger than the TENS unit and is noninvasive. I have had patients that have had spinal cord stimulators implanted that have really helped. Check out http://www.medtronic.com/neuro/paintherapies/pain_treatment_ladder/pdf/1_patient_management.pdf for more information on this. Otherwise Empi and Care Rehab are two common manufacturers of TENS units that we issue in our clinic."

Edited by Ask a PT - Jul 08 2008 at 3:24pm
