Enhancing Treatment Outcomes with Therapeutic Modalities

 Modalities

 Pennsylvania

Discuss up-to-date research regarding ultrasound and electrotherapy, determine treatment parameters, appropriate use and reimbursement of both therapeutic modalities.

Several textbooks and articles have been written on the subject of therapeutic modalities. Unfortunately, only a few of the authors seem to agree on the purpose for using these modalities, and the correct parameters to employ for various conditions. With this lack of consensus, many clinicians have difficulty understanding how, when and why to use therapeutic modalities such as electrotherapy and ultrasound. Also, due to lack of quality research, many clinicians think ultrasound is a worthless modality and that electrotherapy is dangerous to the patient or clinician. Thus, many clinicians have decreased their use of these modalities, increasing their patient's recovery time.

This one-day seminar is designed to assist the clinician in his or her understanding and implementation of electrotherapy and ultrasound to aid the patients in recovery from injury. Based upon 17 years of laboratory research and clinical use, Dr. Draper is aware of the value that modalities can have in patient care. He will share his insights and several case studies regarding modalities in an easy to understand and objective manner. The participant will leave the seminar with the ability to make an informed decision on when to implement modalities into their treatment regimens.

  • Examine some of the most recent research on TENS, Russian Stim, interferential current, iontophoresis and ultrasound, and how these findings can impact your practice
  • Identify the therapeutic effects, indications, contraindications and ideal treatment parameters for electrotherapy and ultrasound
  • Recognize the most common mistakes clinicians make when using electrotherapy and ultrasound
  • Determine how to use electrotherapy and ultrasound with special populations such as teenagers and pulmonary sensitive individuals
  • Outline how to document the use of these modalities and ensure reimbursement
  • Discover how electrotherapy and ultrasound work
  • Recognize the most common mistakes clinicians make when using electrotherapy and ultrasound
  • Discuss up-to-date indications, contraindications and myths related to the use of electrotherapy and ultrasound
  • Discover what the thermal and non-thermal effects of ultrasound are, and how to obtain them
  • Examine new, "state of the art" treatment applications
  • Identify specific dysfunctions that can be treated with electrotherapy and ultrasound
  • Outline how valuable electrotherapy and ultrasound are, based upon research and case studies
  • Determine how to use ultrasound and electrotherapy with special populations such as teenagers and pulmonary sensitive individuals
  • Outline how to document the use of these modalities and ensure reimbursement
Dr. David O. Draper, Ed.D, A.T.C., is a certified athletic trainer and has been an educator for 22 years. He is currently a professor of sports medicine/athletic training at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Dr. Draper has also been a consultant on therapeutic modalities for Accelerated Care Plus since 1998, and a consultant on heat modalities for Procter & Gamble since 2000. In 2000, he spent his sabbatical working as an Athletic Trainer for the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL. Additionally, he has volunteered for many events, including the 1999 Figure Skating National Championships and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Draper earned his Bachelor's degree in Health Science from Utah State University in 1982, obtained his Master's degree in Athletic Training from Brigham Young University in 1984, and received his Doctorate in Education from Northern Illinois University in 1988. He was also presented the Eddie Wojecki Award for receiving the highest score in the nation on the 1984 National Athletic Trainer's Association Certification Examination.

An avid researcher, Dr. Draper has published over 100 publications in scientific journals, such as the Journal of Athletic Training and the Journal of Orthopedic Sports Physical Therapy. Seven of these articles were voted as the Outstanding Research Manuscript Award or runner-up, from the Journal of Athletic Training. He has written chapters on ultrasound and diathermy for two textbooks and he recently completed a textbook with Dr. Ken Knight, entitled, Therapeutic Modalities, The Art and the Science. In 1997, he was honored as the top researcher in the College of Health and Human Performance at BYU. On the national level, in 2001, he was awarded the William G. Clancy, Jr., M.D. medal for distinguished athletic training research (the fifth person to receive this honor). He collaborated with a plastic surgeon in Santa Monica, California, involving the use of ultrasound and diathermy to heat and soften fat prior to liposuction. His latest research involves using ultrasound or pulsed short-wave diathermy prior to joint mobilizations to restore range of motion in patients who lack joint mobility due to injury. His methods have restored full ROM to patients who have had frozen joints for up to 27 years. He has delivered over 250 presentations at seminars and professional symposiums.
